PR-378-09, 16 June 2009 – The Philippine Embassy in Dhaka’s celebration of the 111th Independence Day took off with a radio interview given by Philippine Ambassador to Bangladesh Zenaida Tacorda-Rabago on 10 June 2009 at the Radio Foorti.
The 45-minute radio interview covered social, educational and cultural topics and tourism in the Philippines. This interview was preceded by a radio quiz, which ran for three weeks on selected questions such as the approximate number of islands comprising the Philippine archipelago, the Philippine national hero and basic features of the Philippine peso bills. The awarding of cash prizes was done right after the interview. The cash prizes were donated by the Ambassador Rabago and her two officers, Deputy Chief of Mission Kadatuan P. Usop and Consul Alfredo Borlongan.
On 11 June 2009, the Embassy hosted the 111th Philippine Independence Day Reception. About 300 dignitaries and personalities attended the reception.
Bangladeshi Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs Shafeq Ahmed graced the reception as Guest of Honor.
On 12 June, the Embassy hosted a get-together with the members of the Filipino community in a local restaurant in Dhaka. About 250 Filipino community members attended the lunch. The small Filipino community in Dhaka consists mainly of middle managers of garment factories in Bangladesh, and academic professors working with the American International University in Bangladesh (AIUB), a local counterpart of the AMA University.
Four local English newspapers — Bangladesh Today, New Age, The Spokesman and the Economic Times — published special editions on the occasion of the 111th Philippine Independence Day celebration.
